Assignment 02 - Stop Motion / Frame by Frame Animation Project Part 1

Assignment 02 - Create a Stop Motion / Frame by Frame Animation

The master of stop motion, frame by frame, animation was Ray Harryhausen. Before there was CGI, there was Ray Harryhausen. The technique was similar to creating animated cartoons of the time, like Disney's Snow White or Cinderella, where each movement of the character was laboriously hand-drawn on a separate acetate cel, except Harryhausen created models of creatures which were filmed frame by frame with a motion picture camera with very tiny movements of the creatures' limbs. You can see Harryhausen talk about his creations at this link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQp7qza-HRU

We are going to create a short animation in the Harryhausen style, but update it afterwards using modern technology.

1.) please download the following Adobe programs before the next class session:
      Adobe Bridge
      Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Premiere (iMovie - on Mac)

2.) create and photograph something that has sequential stages to it, and that tells a story, such as:
 - documenting a simple drawing (a stick figure will do)
 - creating a digital illustration (use screenshots to capture each new phase of your creation)
 - documenting something being built (like a LEGO project or a house of cards)
 - something decaying or falling down (like petals falling off of a flower in a vase)

Use your imagination to tell a short story.

3.) take INDIVIDUAL pictures of your creation, step by step, one by one, DO NOT create a video movie

4.) IMPORTANT - all pictures MUST be horizontal - DO NOT hold your camera/smartphone vertically

5.) if you want your camera/smartphone to be in the same place without moving, a tripod will be essential (an inexpensive smartphone tripod can be found at Amazon, Target, or Walmart)

6.) you will probably need about 36-60 individual sequential images and you will need to download these images to your computer desktop - send me an email if you need help moving your smartphone images to your computer or go to this link:

Below, you can see examples of sequential images that will be used to create my sample project (the images, which will become frames in our movie, as being displayed in Adobe Bridge):

Below, you can see a sample video created from individual screen captures (individual screenshots) created by Sam Mollineaux, a previous student:

Assignment 02 - Stop Motion / Frame by Frame Animation Project Part 2

STEP 01 - RESIZING IMAGES: The images that you have created for your stop-motion animation will need to be resized. Whether created on a DSLR camera or a smartphone, these original images will create a file much too large and unwieldy for our purposes. You will need Adobe Bridge and Adobe Photoshop for this part of the assignment. Follow these steps to rep your images and transfer them into Photoshop: 1.) create a new folder on your desktop and give it an appropriate name; i.e., Movie Images, or Animation Photos, etc.  (above) the folder where all images for this client are kept  (above) the folder inside the above folder where all images are kept for this project 2.) on an Apple computer, open ImageCapture to transfer images from your device to your computer (Windows machines have similar programs) 3.) under Devices at the top left hand corner of ImageCapture, select your device and the images from that device will start to pop up in the wind...
